The Problem
Electronic waste includes computers, monitors,
televisions, mobile phones and other items that have
been discarded by their original users. If treated
properly, electronic waste is a valuable source for
secondary raw materials. However, if not treated
properly, electronic waste is a major source of
toxins. Due to lower environmental standards and
working conditions in third world countries,
electronic waste is being sent to these countries
for processing in most cases illegally. Uncontrolled
burning, disassembly, and disposal are causing
environmental and health problems.
Government Regulations
The British Government
forbids trashing or improper disposal of all
electronics. Organizations that do not follow strict
guidelines could face steep fines. Electronics Waste
Recycling fee on all new monitors and televisions
sold to cover the cost of recycling. |
